The topic of this year’s (2016-2017) monthly research seminar is Ancient Drama and Popular Morality. The papers look into the ways in which ancient tragedy and comedy treat diverse aspects of popular morality, broadly conceived. The inquiry extends to the exploration of the way in which the dramatic representation of the mythical past (or of myths that bear a special connection with everyday life) incorporates and interweaves central, as a rule intricate or even contradictory, moral values and categories of classical civilization, as well as broader concerns of the polis. Of special interest is also the way in which other classical sources, especially philosophical works, interact with the dramatic treatment of pertinent ideas and considerations.
