Papanghelis Theodore (Latin Philology, Thessaloniki 1952. 2013).  T. Papanghelis read Classics at the Aristotle University, Thessaloniki.  On a scholarship from the Greek State Scholarship Foundation and subsequently from St John’s College, Cambridge, he pursued postgraduate studies with E. J. Kenney in Latin Philology at the University of Cambridge (PhD, 1985).  Since 1994 he is Professor Ordinarius and Chair of Latin at the Classics Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. As visiting professor at the University of Western Macedonia he has been teaching Theory of Literature since 2008.  He has given lectures and conducted seminars  on Latin Literature in  various departments of Classics in England, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Aegypt and Cyprus as well as in Greece.  As head of the organizing committee and in collaboration with Oxford University he is in charge of international conferences on Latin Philology organized under the aegis of the Trends in Classics journal in Thessaloniki. He is a member of the scientific committee for the Trends in Classics, Rivista di Filologia e di Istruzione Classica and Hellenica.  He took part in several research programmes for the Greek Ministry of Education and The Greek National Bank Cultural Foundation.

His main academic concerns are in the area of classical Latin poetry, Hellenistic poetry and philosophy and Theory.  His publications include:  Propertius: A Hellenistic Poet on Love and Death, Cambridge 1987, Poetics of the Roman Neoteroi (in Greek), Athens 1994, From pastoral eutopia to political utopia.  A study of Virgil’s Eclogues, Athens 1995, Ovid’s Ars Amatoria, translated into Greek with an Essay on Latin Lovers, Athens 2000, Changed Bodies:  Reading Ovid’s Metamorphoses (in Greek), Athens 2009, Rome and her World (in Greek), Thessaloniki 2005, Virgil’s Aeneid, translated into Greek with an introductory essay (forthcoming).  He has co-edited the collective volumes A Companion to Apollonius Rhodius (Leiden-Boston-Köln 2001) with Antonios Rengakos, A Companion to Greek and Roman Pastoral (leiden-Boston 2006) with Marco Fantuzzi and Generic Interfaces in Latin Literature (Berlin-New York 2013) with S. J. Harrison and S. Frangoulidis.  A further co-edited volume on Intertextuality in Latin Literature is forthcoming.

Theodore Papanghelis has also published a large number of articles on classics in both Greek and international learned journals as well as a number of essays on leading figures of modern Greek literature (Cavafy, O. Elytis, T. Valtinos).  Over the last twenty years he has been a regular columnist for the prestigious Greek newspaper To Vima, writing and commenting on a wide range of educational, cultural and political issues.  A collection of his writings as a columnist has appeared in 2008 under the title:  Panostafyla.
